Small Fire Breaks Out in Building on Herkimer Street
No one was injured, and the cause of the fire is under investigation
A small fire broke out on the 3rd floor of a four-story building located at 77 Herkimer Street between Nostrand and Bedford Avenues this afternoon.
Approximately 12 fire trucks and 60 firefighters were called to the scene at around 2:30pm when one of the neighbors heard the fire alarm go off and smelled smoke.
The neighbor, Celeste, said she followed the smoke to an apartment on the 3rd floor, knocked on the door and when no one answered, decided to call 911.

"We knocked on her door, and then the landlord's door, and when no one answered, we called 911," Celeste said. She and her three daughters evacuated the building and watched outside as firefighters sprayed the inside of the unit. "I don't know what happened. Apparently, something in one of the rooms caught on fire."
The fire was extinguished quickly, at around 2:55pm. According to fire officials, the fire started in the rear of the apartment. However, the cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation. The apartment's resident was not home, and no one was injured, said officials.
