To Bed-Stuy Residents, from Council Member Al Vann Regarding Hurricane Irene

There is no mandatory evacuation for residents of the 36th District, including Bedford-Stuyvesant and Northern Crown Heights

None of the 36th Council District is considered low lying, so there is no mandatory evacuation for residents of the district (Bedford-Stuyvesant and northern Crown Heights).

We would urge residents to follow the instructions of the NYC Office of Emergency Management regarding not being outside during the height of the storm (expected between Saturday evening and Sunday evening), preparing portable “Go Bags” in case you must evacuate, stocking an emergency supply kit in case you are instructed to stay at home for several days, and all other matters related to the hurricane. Details are provided in the link to the following brochure.

Plan ahead – the MTA will be shutting down public transit on Saturday at noon, and once the storm begins, floods will make it difficult to travel.
