Viewfinder: The Launch of City Limits Magazine—The Brooklyn Edition

On Tuesday, March 28, at 6:00 pm, the Skylight Gallery in Restoration Plaza hosted the launch of City Limits Magazine’s Brooklyn issue, entitled, “Brooklyn: the Borough Behind the Brand.”

The community cocktail event featured complimentary copies of the magazine, wine, hors d'ouevres and door prizes from Target, The Brooklyn Historical Society and The Prospect Park Zoo.

City Limits launched 35 years ago as a publication for housing advocates on the Lower East Side. It has since grown into a hard policy bi-monthly magazine focused on urban renewal, criminal justice, affordable housing, with an eye on civic and business leaders and how they play a role in the development of their neighborhoods.

“We’re making a big push to try to get City Limits into the hands of people we think should be reading it,” said Jarrett Murphy, City Limits editor-in-chief. “We think there are a lot of people in New York who don’t simply treat New York as a place to live; it’s like a passion for them. Those are our people.”

The launch of the latest Brooklyn issue was the first ever to focus on a borough. A representative from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s office issued a proclamation naming March 28 “City Limits Magazine: The Brooklyn Issue Day.”

“Cover to cover, it’s about Brooklyn, and we feel like Bed-Stuy is a perfect City Limits neighborhood. Because when neighborhoods like this were on the edge, it was the efforts of local people who wanted to save what’s worth saving and to keep fighting,” said Murphy.

“That’s what City Limits was started to chronicle. To be in a place like Bed-Stuy is very exciting. We feel like this is part of our roots.”
