What Do You Think About This Billboard's Message?

Controversial billboard ignites abortion debate

A gigantic billboard that reads, "The Most Dangerous Place for an African American is in The Womb," has been placed in the heart of SoHo, and it is causing a lot of controversy. Many New Yorkers, particularly African-American women, have expressed anger and say they are insulted, because they think the ad is misguided and offensive.

The billboard was erected this week by Life Always™, a pro-life organization. It is a part of a national campaign that proclaims on its website, www.thatsabortion.com, that Planned Parenthood targets minority neighborhoods, as they perform over 300,000 abortions a year.

“During Black History Month, we celebrate our history, but our future is in jeopardy as a genocidal plot is carried out through abortion,” said Life Always Board Member Pastor Stephen Broden.

"We have seen the heartbreaking effects of opportunists who happen to be Black Abortionists perpetrating this atrocity; it’s not just babies who are in danger, it’s also their mothers, and our society at large,” he added.

The campaign's website features recent Census and Centers for Disease Control data showing that African Americans constitute about 13 percent of the American population, yet receive 36 percent of abortions.

This billboard comes on the heels of a vote last Friday by House Republicans to strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood, an attempt to weaken the abortion provider. However, Planned Parenthood is already prohibited from using federal money to perform abortions.

So, if the bill passes the Senate, it will greatly reduce Planned Parenthood's ability to provide contraceptives, HIV tests, breast and cervical cancer screenings and other reproductive health and family planning services.

“It’s going to have far-reaching, adverse effects,” said Reverend Dr. Glenworth Miles of the move to eliminate Title X funding. Miles, who is a minister at  St. George’s Episcopal Church in Bed-Stuy, calls the family programs "absolutely necessary." He said, “Cutting funding will only have bad effects on community life; actually we need more funding for prevention programs.”

In the meantime, the new billboard is causing quite a stir.
