Woman Beaten With Mop In Bed-Stuy Hate Crime, Cops Say

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A woman targeted for her sexually orientation was beaten with a mop on the street in Bed-Stuy earlier this year, according to police.

The unprovoked attack unfolded around 7:25 p.m. on March 27 when a man came up to the 22-year-old woman on Utica Avenue near Atlantic Avenue, police said.

The man, who made slurs about the woman's sexual orientation, grabbed a mop handle and hit the woman multiple times before fleeing on a B46 bus, police said. Police did not immediately have more details about what the man said.

The woman was sent to Woodhull Hospital and treated for lacerations and a concussion, according to police. Her attack is being investigated by the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force, police said.
