A man who the New York Post identified as McLeod's ex-boyfriend, James Brown, has been charged with murder for the brutal stabbing, according to police and reports.

Brown, 62, was reportedly waiting at a cash-checking business inside the store when McLeod arrived and yelled at her about owing him money, witnesses told the outlet.

The witness chased down Brown, who tried to run away, and held him until police arrived, the Post reports. Brown lived just a block from the store, records show.

McLeod was described as a loving mother and nurse, the Post reports.

“She spent a lot of money just to go to school to take care of her little homey, and look what happened,” the witness told the outlet. “The kids got no father, nobody else. She was everything to him. His strength. She raised him right.“
