5 Things You Need to Know Friday

A basketball record, winter fun for tomorrow and plans for winter break are a few of the things you need to know today.

1. Congratulations to John Jay basketball player, Raegan Knox: A big shout-out to Raegan, whom many of you know hit the 1,000 point mark in her basketball career, only the sixth player to do so at John Jay, during Tuesday night's win over Brewster. We'll have a feature story on her accomplishment next week, but wanted to share her post-victory smiles, captured by Chris McCarthy, Katonah Lewisboro athletic director.

2. What to do over winter break: Winter break is quickly approaching, and there are lots of activities to sign your kids up for—if you're not traveling, that is. Visit the websites of the and the to view the class schedules. We'll have more info next week on what to plan while the kids are out of school.

3. Winter Fun Day for the Kids: Here's one we didn't get to feature in our kid's planner this week: Cadette Girl Scout Troop 1039 has invited kids ages 5-9 to make Valentines Cards, lava lamp snow globes, and a tie-dyed Valentine's gift. It's at the Cyrus Russell Community House in Cross River and the cost is $15 per child, which includes a snack. Space is limited, so call today to reserve a spot. Kim Touzeau, Troop Leader Troop 1039 at K2zo@mac.com or 232-3843.

4. The Women's Civic Club of Katonah helped one of their members celebrate their 99th birthday yesterday. Check back later today for some heartwarming video of her party, and the latest on the civic club's activities.

5. A heat wave is coming:  Get out and enjoy the warmer temperatures. The National Weather Service is forecasting highs in the upper 30s and low 40s for the next few days. Put on those boots and enjoy a hike in a local park.
