Bedford Hills Resident Loses $500 to Fraudulent Vacation Renter

Here's a roundup of recent selected police activity at the Bedford police department.

A Bedford Hills resident reported to police this week that he'd been the victim of summer rental scam. On June 3, the resident went on Craig's List to research vacation properties in Rhode Island. He found one he liked and corresponded with the renter via Google chat. The two agreed upon a $1,900 per week rental fee including a $500 deposit, according to Bedford police.

The resident transferred the fee to a bank account to lock in the rental. He then got another message from the renter saying the remainder of the balance needed to be wired via Western Union to a sick relative in Michigan—at which point the would-be vacationer realized he'd been had.

The incident is being investigated by detectives.
