Cinco de Mayo Picks and Organic Gardening

It's 5 things you need to know Thursday.

1. Whiz Kids are off

If you missed hearing about this week's Whiz Kid, tune in next week when this column resumes after the spring break. We'll feature our interview with Miriam Hegglin, who achieved the rank of valedictorian at Fox Lane High School. If you have nominations for whiz kids—from preschool through high school—email lisab@patch.com.

2.     National Grilled Cheese Month

April is National Grilled Cheese Month, a month to celebrate the comforting combination of creamy melted cheese, and crisp lightly toasted bread. Where is your favorite spot in town to get grilled cheese? Tell us in the comments. And if you prefer to make your own grilled cheese, look closely before you bite. You might just find the Virgin Mary staring back up at you, like Diana Duyser did in 1994. Duyser’s grilled cheese Mary sold for $28,000 on Ebay a decade later.

3. Cinco de Mayo

May 5 is right around the corner and we've hunted down the best deals in town for fun festivities. Salsa Fresca, that opened Wednesday, should be receiving its liquor license just in time. Check back at 3 p.m. for our Patch Picks on Cinco de Mayo.

4. Shop at ShopRite and help rebuild Union Baptist Church

ShopRite Supermarkets Inc., and members of Union Baptist Church announced Tuesday a series of fundraising initiatives to assist in the rebuilding of the 100-year old Union Baptist Church in New Rochelle, which was tragically destroyed in a fire on Valentine’s Day. Food and checkout donations are occurring this week at the Bedford Hills, White Plains and New Rochelle store locations with the first fundraising effort, “Resurrecting the Church” Union Baptist Church Benefit Concert, taking place this Saturday, April 23 at the Westchester County Center.

5. Learn about organic vegetable gardening

Cathy Clare's classes at Bedford Audubon continue on Friday. You can help grow fresh vegetables in Bedford Audubon’s large ‘communal’ garden (the harvest is shared by all students) while learning about garden design, starting seeds, companion planting and more. Harvesting produce for your home table is included. Fridays and/or Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  April 1 – October. Fee for the entire growing season applies. If interested, contact Cathy Clare at catmint@optonline.net.
