2. New York State Police Operation Hang-Up

Speaking of distracted driving, New York State Police are cracking down on drivers talking on their cell phones without hands-free devices this week. Operation Hang-Up totaled 8,172 tickets last year, given to drivers on the New York State Thruway for violating the cell phone law.

3. Bedford residents to compete in tennis playoffs

We hear that Bedford residents Sam Swank and John Brosens will be competing in the men's singles event of the US Open Eastern Playoffs, held at the National Tennis Center in Queens from April 16-22nd. The winner of this sectional competition will advance to the national finals on August 18th-22nd in New Haven, CT, and the winner of that will receive a wild card into the qualifying draw of the men's singles event at the US Open tennis championships, held from August 29th-September 11th.
