Greenwich Road Fire Quickly Extinguished

Hot house paint ignited the fire.

A small fire on the roof of a home at 179 Greenwich Road was started by heat guns used to remove paint, fire officials said today.

Firefighters responed to the call just after 1 p.m. today and arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the house. No flames were visible. When firefighters lifted a section of the roof soffit—the flat area under the roof eaves—the fire was discovered and extinguished.

The house was being prepped by contractors for painting. Workers were using the heat guns when the fire started.

"On a hot day, the paint just heats up. And when you have excessive heat, you can have fire," said Jason Siemers, assistant fire chief for the Bedford Village Fire Department who led the efforts at the scene.

The residents were home while the firefighters put out the fire. Minor roof damage was reported. One worker had minor injuries but refused medical treatment.

Emergency workers and fire departments from Mt. Kisco, Pound Ridge, Katonah and Chappaqua also responded to the home on Greenwich Road. Trucks pulled out about an hour and a half after they first responded, said Siemers.
