Harckham Plays Politics with Playland; Taxpayers Get Stuck Holding the Bill

A letter from Peter Michaelis, candidate for County Legislature, District 2.

It must be an election year, because I can see no other reason why Pete Harckham and his Democratic Super Majority on the Board of Legislators have decided to end the $5 Playland spectator fee for Westchester County Residents.

This political pandering will cost Westchester taxpayers nearly $400,000 dollars in lost revenue at a park which already loses nearly $5 million dollars a year. Harckham knows this money is going to come out of taxpayer pockets one way or another, because he has failed to identify spending cuts to offset the loss of the spectator fees.

When will our representatives in county government start representing us?  Westchester taxpayers are hurting on a large scale – losing their jobs and losing their homes.  And yet, Harckham and his White Plains cohorts don’t seem to listen.  Instead, they waste taxpayer dollars debating park entrance fees instead of finding real solutions to making county government smaller and smarter.  Playland is fun and games, but playing politics with taxpayers’ hard earned money is not.
