Keane Opens Auto Shop in Bedford Hills
Mike Keane, a John Jay graduate, has set up shop not far from where he grew up.
Michael Keane, a South Salem native and John Jay High School graduate, has opened a new auto business in the same location he worked as a mechanic while attending college full-time.
Keane's Autoworks, on the corner of Harris Road and Adams Street, is in the space formerly occupied by Top Class Auto, and most recently, by Bennie's Towing. They offer a range of services, from heating and air conditioning repair, to oil changes and state inspections, to more specialized computer diagnostics.
"People may think they have to go to the dealer if they have high-end cars, but we specialize in foreign, domestic and classic repairs," said Keane, noting that Audi and Volvo are two car makes they have particular expertise in repairing.

Some locals may remember Keane from his all-star sports days at John Jay, where he played ice hockey and baseball. But though he may be fresh out of college—he received his bachelor's degree from Western Connecticut State University in May—he's ready for his role as business owner and already has six years of experience in the industry.
And he said that his two employees have between them 50 years of combined experience. The two seasoned mechanics gave him a push to open his own business, even in a faltering economy. So Keane did what many local graduates do not—stayed in the area to open his own shop.

"After Bennie's Towing decided not to renew their lease, they helped me make the decision to take over, and have been really supportive," he said. The pair prefer to remain behind the scenes, declining to be interviewed for this story.
To prepare for his grand opening, Keane refurbished the mechanics' area, purchased new computer diagnostics equipment and tire machines, gave the exterior a fresh coat of paint and moved new black leather couches into the spotless, inviting customer waiting room. He's not all struts and brakes, however, and signs of Keane's interests outside of work are visible in his office behind the front counter. Two electric guitars are mounted on the paneled walls (he plays), along with a poster-sized photo of him with musician Steven Tyler, taken on a Hawaiian vacation.
Keane is focused on getting his new venture off the ground. "I hope people remember me and will give my business a shot," he said. Appointments are available by phone and walk-ins may be accommodated.
Keane's Autoworks is located at 418 Adams Street in Bedford Hills. The hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The phone number is: (914) 864-2211.
