The award was presented by KES families including Karen and David Panzirer and their daughter, Morgan and Michael Bieber and his daughter, Kaitlin. Both girls have Type I diabetes.

"As a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, I can say that there is no one more deserving of this award than Karen Greenwood," said Karen Panzirer. "I could go on and on about how incredibly competent, caring and knowledgable she is."

Ms. Greenwood’s approach to T1D care is very individualized, based on the unique needs of each student. She fosters an environment that ensures teachers and students understand the severity of T1D so that they are supportive of students’ needs. She also works to promote independence, especially as students are transitioning to middle school. Ms. Greenwood demonstrates advanced knowledge of the technical elements of treating diabetes, from glucometers to insulin pens to pumps, and communicates regularly with students’ physicians and family members.

Ms. Greenwood has been a long-time supporter of JDRF’s efforts, by promoting its annual Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising event and walking with students from her school. She also upholds JDRF’s mission of advocacy – standing strong for the children affected by T1D so they receive the understanding, fair treatment, and health care they deserve.
