Northern Westchester Leaders Stand together for Earth Day

Bedford Supervisor Lee Roberts writes a guest column with an Earth Day challenge—energize your home.

In honor of Earth Day, 11 chief executives of Northern Westchester ask you to join us by taking the Energize Pledge.

The Energize Earth Day Pledge offers an excellent opportunity for us to help the environment by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases our houses are emitting. Together we can dramatically and quickly reduce our energy consumption.

Homeowners throughout our region are wasting energy and money due to leaks and cracks in homes, in addition to insufficient insulation. We encourage all of you to join us in participating in Energize New York right now.

With the potential to save Northern Westchester residents $52 million annually if one in three homeowners pursue energy-saving upgrades, we cannot express enough how incredible of an opportunity our towns have to take wasted dollars in energy bills and reinvest them in the local economy.

As for Bedford, it goes to the heart of our challenge—which is to reduce our energy use 20 percent by 2020. Since structures produce 53 percent of GHG emissions by using energy to run our houses, this is where we'll get the biggest bang for the effort.

In addition to the opportunity to save money and reduce emissions, residents who pursue Energize New York’s home energy assessment will learn how they can make their homes more comfortable by reducing air flow and improving insulation.

An energy efficiency professional will present you with a comprehensive report once they’ve visited your home and measured where and how much energy your house is leaking, and the Energize NY team will be there with you every step of the way and remain a trusted source on everything from choosing a contractor to filling out the paperwork.

Saving money has no downside. For people on a fixed income fuel prices at $4.35/gallon are a killer, and can act as a financial incentive to doing the right thing for the environment. So join us in taking the Energize Earth Day Pledge by getting your home an energy assessment and learning how you can dramatically reduce your energy bills and live more sustainably at the same time. Show others that we care about our community — that we care about creating a more sustainable future for our friends, family and neighbors.

Each of the following chief executives, including myself, have signed the Energize Pledge to lead by example in supporting the Energize NY program. We have committed to a free comprehensive home energy assessment that will tell us where our homes are losing energy and how much money and emissions we can save by making the recommended upgrades.
