Local Nursery Owner Faces Felony Check Fraud Charges

Michael Stephen Comisac of Bedford Hills was arrested last week for writing bad checks to a North Carolina nursery, police said.

A Bedford Hills resident and business owner was arrested last week after Bedford police learned he faced check-fraud charges in North Carolina.

Michael Stephen Comisac, 42, owner of Comisac Nursery on Route 117, was taken into custody outside of his Bedford hills residence on Sept. 19 at about 9:20 a.m., according to Bedford police.

Local authorities received word on Aug. 21 that a fugitive from justice wanted in North Carolina was living and working in Bedford.

"We were contacted by the Yancey County Sherriff's office in Burnsville, NC, about the active warrant for Comisac," said Police Lieutenant Jeffrey Dickan.

Bedford police arrested Comisac last week and charged him with issuing a bad check in the amount of $7,000. Comisac also faces a fugitive from justice charge in the state of New York, said Dickan.

Comisac remains in jail in New York while awaiting extradition to North Carolina.

Comisac wrote four bad checks totaling $30,000 to McMahan Nursery in Burnsville, N.C., during a four-month period beginning in April, according to Yancey County sheriff’s Lt. John Robinson, The Journal News reported.

The business, located at 531 Bedford Road, sold and auctioned trees for transplant. At press time, the nursery stood empty and did not appear to be operating.
