NEW YORK — The polls have closed and we now know who will represent New York's 40th State Senate District and perhaps shift control of the legislative agenda in Albany.

Several media outlets have projected Democrat Pete Harckham as the winner of his race to keep his seat.

With 335 of 355 precincts reporting, incumbent Pete Harckham, with 60,905 votes, has defeated challenger Khris Kerr with 42,495 votes in a tight race, according to unofficial results.

“I truly appreciate all of the support I have received during this campaign, and thank all of the voters in Senate District 40 for participating in this important election,” Harckham said declaring victory Wednesday morning. “The confidence and trust that residents have placed in me once again will continue to guide my intentions. These are challenging times, though, and I look forward to being engaged in the hard work necessary to ensure a better future for all.”

The growing popularity of early voting added a sense of urgency to the waning days of the race. In an election season that saw district lines re-drawn, and re-drawn again in the Hudson Valley, voters got to know new candidates and a few familiar faces, and in some cases, former allies turned rivals, surviving hard-fought primary races and incumbents battled newly invigorated challenges.

It all came down to Election Day 2022.

Incumbent Pete Harckham is seeking reelection but faced a challenge from Gina Arena in a district that now includes the towns of Beekman, Pawling and the village of Pawling in Dutchess County, the towns of Carmel, Patterson and Southeast, and the village of Brewster in Putnam County, and the city of Peekskill, the towns of Cortlandt, Lewisboro, Mount Pleasant, New Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers and Yorktown, the town/village of Mount Kisco, and the villages of Briarcliff Manor, Buchanan, Croton-on-Hudson, Pleasantville and Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County.
