One-of-a-Kind Gifts, a Move for Ruby Sue and a New Real Estate One-Stop-Shop

Some notable changes and openings in Katonah.

Fall is here and along with the crisp feel of the air is the sense of things starting anew—in school, sports, and in the downtown Katonah commercial district. Here's your Patch roundup of what's sprouting in Bedford and Katonah (no shutters this week—that we know of):

Baxter & Co. Home has set up shop in the front of the Katonah Art and Frame Shop at 188 Katonah Avenue. Owner Mary Mayland started the business in the Cross River Shopping Plaza over a year ago, but the space wasn't a good fit. Coming to Katonah has brought new traffic to her business, and to the frame shop—it's a "mutually beneficial move," she said.

Mayland hunts down one-of-a-kind antique or vintage pieces at estate sales and then stylizes them to "put my own twist on them," she said. She recently transformed two 19th century French mirrors from shabby to chic by taking them apart, cleaning the glass and gold-leafing the borders, a technique she applies to many of her refurbished finds.

You'll find chandeliers, small occasional tables, sconces and a plethora of animal figurines. "People express themselves through their pets," said Mayland. She stocks a lot of dogs, but is looking to add more horse figurines to cater to the equestrian-loving population in Bedford. They're open Tues. through Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ruby Sue has moved from its old spot on Valley Road to 157 Katonah Avenue, next to Tom's. You'll find the same chic lines they carried before—from Joe's Jeans, to Ella Moss, Velvet and Corey Lynn Calter—but in a whole new setting. The extra space showcases the clothes, designed for women age 15 to 65. The fresh look gives the store a Soho vibe, with snappy black and white walls and industrial clothing racks.

Ruby Sue's hours remain Mon. - Fri. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We recently told you about Country Estates and Manors opening its doors, bringing the total number of real estate offices in town to four.

Make that five.

William Raveis opened just over a week ago at 95 Katonah Avenue. They're the largest real estate company in CT, said Eric Rosenfeld, manager and broker. Rosenfeld explained why Katonah will benefit from another brokerage office.

"We are far more organized in the region than any other company, and we are a one-stop-shop," said Rosenfeld. "We provide mortgage, insurance, real estate and a title company in one office."

In addition to servicing to the buyer and seller, William Raveis serves its agents well, too, he added. Rosenfeld believes they have a robust intranet that gives agents marketing and communications capabilities that benefit agents and their clients.

Though William Raveis is just starting to infiltrate Westchester from its more New England-centric business, Rosenfeld is no stranger to Katonah. "I've worked in this area for 10 years, and am the fourth generation in my family to work in Northern Westchester," he said.

William Raveis is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
