Police: Burglar Confronts Teen, Steals Car

A 19-year-old Bedford teen interrupted a burglary in her own home Monday.

A teenager in Bedford returned to her Haines Road home just before noon on Monday and discovered her home was being burglarized, Bedford police said.

The young woman, 19, parked her car in the driveway and entered the house, which was unlocked. She apparently called out to her dog, who was sitting on an upstairs landing. Seconds later, she said, a man unknown to her exited the master bedroom. He initially told her he was with a home alarm company.

Minutes later he took her car keys, a wallet with a small amount of cash and her iPhone, and fled from the residence in the family car.

Police are urging residents and business owners to be on heightened alert during the holiday season when these types of crimes are more likely to occur; the department issued an advisory Tuesday afternoon to business owners to keep their eyes out for suspicious groups of unknown people entering their stores.
