A 24-year-old Katonah man is accused of stealing aluminum signs from a unit at the storage facility where he works, and selling them for more than $5,500.
Carmel Police arrested Nicholas Bellantoni earlier this week on a felony charge of third-degree grand larceny.
The theft was reported Monday. Officer Michael Sheil responded to the Mahopac self-storage unit, which the renter was using to store materials for a private business he runs.
"Officer Sheil was able to ascertain that the locks to the unit were not tampered with and that three employees had access with keys to the storage unit," Carmel Police said in a statement. "...He was able to obtain admissions from one of the employees that he had stolen several units of aluminum signs from the storage unit over the last several months and had sold them to a salvage yard located in Westchester County."
Records obtained from the salvage yard showed the signs were sold for $5,587, according to authorities. The owner estimated the value of the signs to be between $15,000 and $30,000.
Bellantoni was arraigned before Carmel Justice Joseph Spofford and sent to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail. He's due in Carmel Justice Court June 10.
