A 22-year-old Katonah woman is out about $1,600 after she signed up for a phony mystery shopping program, according to officials.
The complainant attends the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. She saw an advertisement on the school's online job board seeking mystery shoppers, she told Bedford Police. Mystery shopping is a technique used by some companies to measure quality, service and more through an unknown consumer's experience.
After receiving a check for $1,850, the complainant was instructed to deposit the money, but keep $200 for herself, Lt. Jeffrey Dickan said. She was told to wire the difference—about $1,626.
The check did not clear, and the bank removed the money from the victim's account.
Police are investigating the incident, which occurred sometime in the last two weeks and was reported Monday. They warn folks that any sort of transaction involving overpaying and returning money is not a good idea.
