Polls Open at 6 p.m. for Fire Department Elections

Each of Bedford's volunteer fire departments take place between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Voting isn't over for 2012—yet.

In Bedford—and in communities throughout New York State—fire commission elections are being held Tuesday from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

It is the local fire commission that sets the property tax levy for each district, and manages the department's budget. Only residents who live in a particular fire district may vote in that district’s election.

Here's a rundown of what's happening in each district:

Bedford Hills Fire Department

Voting takes place at the firehouse at 332 Bedford Road. Voters will be choosing two commissioners:

  • One five-year term starting Jan. 1, 2013 ending Dec. 31, 2017.
  • One one-year term starting Jan. 1, 2012 ending Dec. 31, 2013.

Bedford Village Fire Department

Voting takes place at the firehouse at 34 Village Green. Voters will be choosing one commissioner:

  • One five-year term starting Jan. 1, 2013 ending Dec. 31, 2017.

and deciding whether to approve:

  • A proposition designating the fire commissioner's treasurer position to be an appointed position "from and following the expiration of the current treasurer's elected term which expires Dec. 31, 2013."

Katonah Fire Department

Voting takes place at the Katonah firehouse at 65 Bedford Road in Katonah.

Voters will be choosing:

  • One fire commissioner for a term of five years starting Jan 1, 2012 ending Dec. 31, 2013.
