Restaurants, Markets Rebounding After Outages

Ristorante Lucia's in Bedford Village has been busy since Hurricane Sandy subsided.

"We have been running on a generator since the power outage started," said Cristina Diana, manager at the restaurant on Old Post Road. "It was enough to power our freezers and walk-in refrigerator. So we've been crowded all week—people won't go hungry here." The restaurant will be serving from noon until 11 p.m. all weekend.

Diana said she's seen very few other places open in Bedford Village. The power outage is estimated to last another day or two there, according to restoration times posted by NYSEG.

Other establishments weren't as lucky.

Mrs. Green's in Katonah easily lost thousands of dollars in product, said employee Darwin Maldonado. The store was back in business Friday morning but has no fruit, dairy or vegetables until a delivery later in the weekend.

Cynthia Brennan at Table Local Market said her losses will total in the tens of thousands of dollars. Though she had a small generator, it wasn't enough to sustain all of the store's perishables through the four-day outage in Bedford Hills. On Thursday, they installed a bigger generator that could power the whole store—just in time for the power to come back on.

"That's the nature of the business," she said. "Today we're open, with plenty of delicious food and heat. We are taking deliveries and working to restock."

She and her staff were preparing a full menu of soups, salads, sandwiches,
and fresh baked goods. The store is staying open late, until 8:30 p.m. Friday night and Saturday night and offering "comfort dinners" of lasagnas, macaroni and cheese and chicken dishes. Locals can call in advance for take out or stay-in, at 914-241-0269.

The A & P in Katonah opened back up Thursday afternoon. The store also lost all of its perishables but expects to have fresh dairy and produce after a Saturday delivery, according to Claire Broche, an employee at the store.
