Student Exhibit to Open at Katonah Museum Sunday

The students were chosen by art teachers after a day-long poster and design workshop.

An exhibit of art works by local high school students will open at the Katonah Museum of Art starting Sunday.

"Young Artists 2010" will run through Feb. 14. The museum will hold an opening reception for the exhibit from 5 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The works being exhibited are chosen by art teachers at each of the schools taking part in the show. Each year, students take part in a day-long poster and invitation design workshop at the museum that is led by illustrator and educator Louis Netter. Students also learn what it takes to design and install an art exhibition in the museum's Young Artist Program.

Each year, the design of the exhibit's invitation and poster are chosen by museum volunteers, staff and board members. This year's poster for the exhibit was created by Julie Safferstein of Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua. Other poster designs can be seen at the Katonah Museum's Facebook page.

About 400 students from more than 30 high schools in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, and Fairfield counties are taking part in this year's exhibit, which features both paintings and sculpture. In addition to John Jay and Horace Greeley high schools, schools taking include Fox Lane, North Salem, Yorktown, Lakeland, Walter Panas, and Yorktown high schools and the Harvey School.
