HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Holiday travelers and paradegoers won't be getting the dry pavement they hoped for this year, but the rain is very much needed and welcome a little closer to home.

With Thanksgiving being one of the heaviest travel days, expected to shatter records this year, all eyes are on Mother Nature to see what the weather will bring on Turkey Day.

According to Brian Ciemnecki, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, it's going to be a soggy holiday.

Thursday morning's rain is expected to continue moving across the region, but will clear out by mid-afternoon, he said. Cooler temps are also expected, in the middle 40s, Ciemnecki said. "It's going to be mainly a damp day," he said. "A great day to lie on the couch and watch football."

Wednesday should be a dry day with some sun, but cooler, with highs in the low 50s and then a drop to the upper-to-mid-30s Wednesday night, Ciemnecki said.

On Thanksgiving, the forecast calls for rain, Ciemnecki said. "We're looking at another storm system to come into the area, with rain expected to develop around daybreak, moving to New York City and western Long Island," he said.

And that forecast is not slated to change, with Thanksgiving likely a washout, he said.
"We're pretty much expecting rain for a pretty decent chunk of the day," he said. Although there's a chance for some dry air late in the afternoon, the forecast remains for rainfall in the afternoon, Ciemnecki said.

The region is expected to see around 3/4 of an inch of rain on Thanksgiving. "It's much-needed," Ciemnecki said.

Winds could move across the area later on Thursday, he added.

Next, a cold front will move across the Hudson Valley

Highs on Saturday will reach the middle 40s, with lows in the middle to upper 20s Saturday night; Sunday's temps will reach the lower 40s, and plunge to the mid-to-upper 20s Sunday night. As everyone heads back to work and school Monday, highs are expected to reach the lower 40s, with a low in the mid-to-low 20s Monday night.
