"After a decade, Free Arts Day, now freeARTSWeekend, is as relevant and needed as when we first initiated it," said ArtsWestchester CEO Janet T. Langsam in a press release. One of the weekend's highlights include the P.A.M Band (Partially Artificial Musicians) featuring violinist and composer Kurt Coble, and his crew of 20 robotic instruments at the in White Plains on Dec. 5.
Coble will give two lectures on the mechanical design of the instruments and how they work. Instruments will be on display from 2-5 p.m. Attendees can see demonstrations and tryout the instruments through lasers and other devices.
The P.A.M Band will accompany pianist Vytas Baksys of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at 5 p.m. to play music from the 1920's silent film "Metropolis."
"This all started by accident," said Coble in a press release. "About ten years ago, I was working on a children's puppet show, and a friend asked me if I could wire a contraption to have one of the puppets play a violin. After that I was hooked and kept adding to our ensemble."
