Donation Drive Underway for Family of Bellmore Man Fatally Struck by Car in Seaford

Washington Hair Stylists in Seaford sets up donation jar raising funds for family of its longtime barber, Antonio Salerno of Bellmore, after he was struck and killed by a car leaving work on Nov. 26.

A donation drive is underway at a Seaford barbershop raising funds for the family of a Bellmore man struck and killed by a car while crossing Washington Avenue in Seaford.

Antonio Salerno worked for many years as a part-time barber at Washington Hair Stylists on 1702 Washington Ave. in Seaford. It was while walking to his car across the street from the barbershop on Nov. 26 at 5:47 p.m. that the 73-year-old man was struck by a male driver before being pronounced dead 28 minutes later at a local hospital.

One of the owners of Washington Hair Stylists, who goes by the name "Joe the Barber", said he decided soon after Salerno's tragic death to raise funds for his grieving family. A donation jar was placed in front of the business and will remain there until the end of the week.

"Tony meant a lot to the community," he said. "People have been very generous."

Salerno, a longtime Bellmore resident, was the barber to many in the local community including Seaford Public Library president Peter Ruffner.

"He was a really nice gentleman," Ruffner said. "He always had a smile on his face."
