Long Island Weather: Strong Storms, 60 MPH Winds Possible

The island could get hit with thunderstorms packing 60 mph wind gusts. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A hazardous weather outlook and wind advisory have been issued for Long Island with potentially strong thunderstorms on the way later Saturday.

The wind advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. Sunday. Southwest winds of 15-25 mph will gust up to 50 mph, the National Weather Service says. With any heavier showers and thunderstorms, especially along any squall line, gusts up to 60 mph will be possible.

Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages could occur. The strongest winds and the highest risk of storms will come after sunset Saturday, according to the weather service's hour-by-hour forecast.

The rain will taper off early Sunday which is shaping up to be a decent day with a cloudy start giving away to sun and a high near 50 degrees.

Saturday- A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 1pm. Areas of fog before 1pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Breezy, with a south wind 14 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

Saturday Night- Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2am, then a chance of showers between 2am and 4am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Low around 39. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 24 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday- Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 47. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph.

Sunday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 35. West wind around 6 mph.

Monday- Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 51. West wind 6 to 13 mph.

Monday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 36.

Tuesday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 51.

Tuesday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Wednesday- Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54.
