Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued As Strong Storms Approach LI

The National Weather Service says an isolated tornado or waterspout cannot be ruled out for parts of the island. See the latest forecast.

The National Weather Service says there is a slight chance for strong to severe thunderstorms today across Long Island and they say an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out completely on parts of the island.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for northern Nassau County and northwestern Suffolk County where there is the highest chance of severe storms.

"The main threat is damaging winds," the outlook says. "An isolated tornado or waterspout is also possible."

More thunderstorms are in the forecast Thursday through Saturday.

There is a high risk of rip currents at all ocean facing beaches Wednesday. If you are in the ocean, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

The full forecast:

Wednesday- A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. South wind 7 to 15 mph.

Wednesday Night- A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. Southwest wind 11 to 16 mph.

Thursday- A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Southwest wind 10 to 14 mph.

Thursday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph.

Friday- A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. South wind 9 to 14 mph.

Friday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73.

Saturday- A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85.

Saturday Night- A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 88.
