Hello, Polar Vortex; Snow Enters The Long Island Forecast

Temperatures will approach 60 early in the week, but then a polar vortex will send temperatures plummeting with the potential for snow.

Buckle up. It's going to be a wild weather week ahead. We may go from near 60 degrees on Tuesday to snow on the ground Friday on Long Island.

"The dramatic change in temperature will be boosted by not only the cold air coming in, but also the warmth that builds ahead of the cold air early next week," AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok says.

The best chance of wet weather (70 percent), in the form of rain, will come Tuesday night into Wednesday. The National Weather Service says there's a 30 percent chance of snow and rain come Friday.

"Things become even more uncertain after this, largely depending if, when and how far south a lobe of the polar vortex travels across the Great Lakes and NE." the NWS says in a forecast discussion Saturday night. "For now, have gone with slight chances of rain/snow showers for Saturday."

Once the cold weather pattern gets rolling, it may stay cold through the middle of the month in the Northeast, according to AccuWeather.

"However, there is some indication of the cold air retreating during the week leading up to Christmas," Pastelok says.
