LI Resident, Holocaust Survivor, Dies at 93

NORTH BELLMORE, NY — A Holocaust survivor, who lived in North Bellmore, died earlier this month.

Ruth Mermelstein was 93, Newsday said.

Mermelstein, who was born Rachel Genuth in Romania, was one of six children. Her father was sent to a Nazi labor camp in 1941 in Hungary. A year later, Newsday said, he was sent to Auschwitz, along with most of her family.

Once in the U.S., Mermelstein helped her husband's kosher business and she spent more than 25 years at Bloomingdale's.

After retiring, she started doing speaking engagements about her experiences during the Holocaust.
