Long Island Weather: Will The Record-Breaking Heat Stick Around? Plus The Latest On Hurricane Maria

We've got your week ahead forecast and the latest details on where Hurricane Maria is headed.

Long Islanders flocked outdoors Sunday, soaking up record-breaking heat on the first weekend of fall. The workweek won't be as hot, but temperatures are still expected to be about 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.

The high on Monday will be near 80 degrees under plenty of sunshine. Temperatures will also flirt with 80 from Tuesday to Thursday on Long Island, the National Weather Service says.

The warmth won't last forever, though. Friday and next weekend will feel much more like fall.

The next chance of any rain (and the chance is slight) will come during the middle of the week as a cold front approaches from the west.

Hurricane Maria, with winds of 105 mph, was located about 410 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. as of Sunday at 8 p.m.

Maria is forecast to continue moving northward, paralleling the East Coast, and it is likely that some direct impacts will occur along portions of the coast beginning Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center says. A tropical storm watch has been issued for a portion of the North Carolina coast.

Maria is expected to make a sharp right turn out to sea after it nears North Carolina. There's only a 5-10 percent that Long Island sees tropical-storm-force winds (39 mph or higher) from Maria.

Maria is causing some rough conditions on the water. A high rip current risk remains in effect until 9 p.m. Monday for all Long Island ocean-facing beaches. The City of Long Beach Fire Department says it made 13 water rescues on Sunday.

Ocean waves of 5-7 feet are likely Monday.
