10 Hospitalized After Carbon Monoxide Poisoning On LI: Police

Ten people were hospitalized by carbon monoxide poisoning at a multi-family home on Long Island Thursday morning, police say.

BRENTWOOD, NY – Two people were seriously injured and eight others were hospitalized by carbon monoxide poisoning on Long Island Thursday morning, Suffolk County police told Patch.

Emergency crews responded to a 911 call reporting that a resident was feeling sick at a home at 150 American Blvd. in Brentwood at around 7:05 a.m., police said.

Police said that upon arrival, they found 10 people in the multifamily residence suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and determined that the gas leak originated from an oil burner malfunction.

One male resident, 87, was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson for serious injuries, while his son, 52, was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

Eight other residents, between the ages of 10 and 42, were transported to local hospitals for minor injuries, police said.

The Town of Islip Fire Marshal also responded.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas produced when fossil fuel is burned that can cause sudden illness and death.
