Bicyclist Struck By Drugged Driver In Suffolk Dies: Police
UPDATE: The Central Islip man charged with DWAI in the case pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Monday, online court records show.
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — A 19-year-old bicyclist seriously injured when he was struck in Central Islip by a sedan driven by a driver who was impaired by drugs died on Monday, Suffolk police said.
Eryk McPherson, of Brentwood, was riding a bicycle westbound across Joshuas Path at Vanderbilt Avenue when he was struck by a 2012 Honda sedan traveling southbound on Joshuas Path at around 7:30 p.m., police said, adding that he was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.
The driver of the Honda, David Alfaro, 21, of Central Islip, was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, police said.

He was held overnight at the 3rd Precinct in Bay Shore, according to police.
Alfaro pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday, online court records show. His bail was set at $100,000 cash, $300,000 insured bond, and $1 million partially secured surety bond, the records show.

He was represented by the Legal Aid Society, which does not comment on cases.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check, according to police.
The Major Case Squad is investigating.
