Man Charged With DWI After Fatal Brentwood Crash: Police

The car was struck by a garbage truck, killing one passenger, police said.

BRENTWOOD, NY — An intoxicated driver collided with a garbage truck in Brentwood on Friday morning, killing a passenger in the car, Suffolk County Police said.

Miguel Portillo, 30, of Brentwood, was driving a 2006 Infiniti eastbound on Suffolk Avenue around 4:30 a.m. when he tried to make a left turn onto Fulton Street. His vehicle was struck by a westbound 2014 Kenwood garbage truck, police said.

Portillo's front-seat passenger, Ronald Landaverde, 30, of Brentwood, died at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.

Portillo’s rear-seat passenger, a 43-year-old man, was taken with non-life-threatening injuries to South Shore University Hospital.

The operator of the garbage truck was not hurt.

Portillo was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore with serious injuries.

He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. He will be arraigned at a later date.
