Murder Charge For LI Man Who Used BMW As A 'Deadly Weapon': DA

A Long Island man has been indicted for murder after allegedly assaulting and killing a man by running him over with his BMW, the DA says.

BRENTWOOD, NY – A Brentwood man has been indicted for killing another man by running him over with a BMW, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney.

Alex Reyes, 21, of Brentwood, was indicted on Thursday for second-degree murder for allegedly killing 46-year-old Alexander Velasquez, also of Brentwood, the DA said.

"The defendant allegedly transformed his vehicle into a deadly weapon to carry out a violent and alarmingly fatal act," Tierney said. "This particularly dangerous escalation of violence is one our office takes very seriously."

According to the DA, on June 22 around 4 a.m., Velasquez was standing in a parking lot on Clarke Street near Miguelino’s Bar in Brentwood when he was allegedly attacked by Reyes and a group of unknown men, the DA said.

During the attack, Reyes and another man punched and kicked Velasquez, causing him to collapse helplessly in the parking lot, the DA said.

Reyes then allegedly killed him by running him over three times with his 2021 white BMW while Velasquez lay helplessly on the ground, the DA said.

Reyes then allegedly fled the area, leaving Velasquez’s lifeless body lying in the parking lot, the DA said.

The DA said a Good Samaritan called 911 after discovering Velasquez’s body minutes later and he was pronounced deceased by the medical examiner at the scene.

On June 23, Suffolk Police Homicide detectives located Reyes on Wicks Road in Brentwood driving the same 2021 white BMW he allegedly used to run over and kill Velasquez and took him into custody, the DA said.

On July 3, Reyes was arraigned before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutus for second-degree murder, a Class A felony, the DA said. Wilutis ordered Reyes remanded without bail during the pendency of the case, the DA said. He is due back in court on Aug. 18 and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the top count, the DA said.

He is being represented by Peter Mayer, Jr., who was not immediately available for comment.
