Suffolk PD To Host 'Ramadan Conference' To Show Holiday Safety Efforts

The event will facilitate a conversation with community members about safety efforts being implemented for worshipers.

BRENTWOOD, NY — Suffolk County Police will honor a sacred Islamic month while helping those who celebrate stay safe.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison will host a Ramadan Conference on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Suffolk County Police Academy, located at 502 Wicks Road in Brentwood, to facilitate a conversation with community members about safety efforts being implemented for worshipers, a release said.

The conference will include presentations from the Suffolk County Police Department Homeland Security and Criminal Intelligence Bureau and Hate Crimes Unit. It will detail state and federal laws and focus on ways to report hate crimes, strategies to secure places of worship, and how to protect worshipers from potential crimes and violence.

Ramadan will be celebrated by Muslims worldwide from March 22 through April 21. It is considered the most sacred month in Islam, and consists of fasting, prayer, and an introspective and often somber reflection on one’s relationship with God.

The month ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, or Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, from April 21 to April 22.
