“Most of the students had never sewn before or made a beaded friendship bracelet,” said Jean Windels, a science teacher and eighth grade team leader. “The crafters were very enthusiastic about their projects as they embraced their tasks and took pride in their handcrafted creations.”

In addition, the eighth graders adorned each package with uplifting messages, aiming to bring joy and hope to patients. The students will donate their handmade items to the Creative heARTS program at White Plains Hospital, which uses the artistic talents of community members to engage with patients and staff in a meaningful way.

Prior to working on the crafts, the students connected with Laura Sobel, director of ancillary programs and volunteer services at the hospital. She provided insights into the program and volunteer opportunities for the students. She reminded them that even the smallest idea has the potential to make a profound difference in the world.

The project directly aligned with one of the Bronxville Promise dispositions, which encourages students to be engaged citizens, weaving kindness and compassion to make a difference in their community and beyond.
