Bronxville HS Junior Wins Jerome G. Sala Memorial Music Competition
The "outstanding oboist, musician and leader," has been invited to perform as a soloist with the Lehman College Band on May 18.

BRONXVILLE, NY — A student musician has brought a prestigious award home after an impressive showing.
The Bronxville Union Free School District announced that Bronxville High School junior, Tiantong Wang, has been named the winner of the Lehman College Jerome G. Sala Memorial Competition, earning a scholarship in recognition of his exceptional technical skill and artistic presentation on the oboe.
As part of the award, the teen has been invited to perform as a soloist with the Lehman College Band on May 18, in the Lovinger Theater at Lehman College.

School officials say that Wang's impressive achievement while competing against students from across the NYC metro area reflects his dedication to refining his craft.
"Tiantong is an outstanding oboist, musician and leader," Bronxville band director Uma Karkala said. "He is an outstanding musician due to his ability to focus his energy and effort for continued growth and success."

The district says that since Wang joined Bronxville two years ago, he has distinguished himself through his artistry and perseverance. He serves as principal oboist in the Bronxville Honors Band and is also a member of the high school jazz ensemble. Wang's accomplishments also include being selected for the 2024 NYSSMA Conference All-State Symphonic Band, where he represented Bronxville as an oboist at the state level.
Outside of school, Wang recently performed as principal oboist with the Greater Westchester Youth Orchestras Association in a concert at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall. In addition, he continues to develop his musicianship during the summer as a member of the Westchester Band.
