Eastchester's Restaurant Ban Criticized

Slate Magazine's business and economics correspondent has some harsh words regarding Eastchester's "Fast Casual" restaurant ban.

Slate Magazine's Matthew Yglesias is criticizing Eastchester's new restaurant ban. Yglesias says the ban "creates a protected class of capitalists," when it comes to Eastchester's local businesses. The Slate business and economics correspondent adds that the ban causes workers to be stuck "working for a less-competent boss in a lower-productivity role."

For those of you who have not been following this story, the Town of Eastchester amended its zoning code to prevent restaurants with a stand-up counter in the front and menus on the wall. The new ban will prevent restaurants like Panera Bread from setting up shop here. The ban also prevents chain restaurants from opening up in Eastchester, if the chain has 15 or more locations.

The new rules weny into effect as the town's moratorium on food business applications expired. Town officials say restaurants that are here already will be grandfathered in.
