Saint Joseph’s to Present Program on Teen Drug and Alcohol Use

Program at Bronxville Library on May 19 shares tips with parents on how they can spot signs of drug use in their children

BRONXVILLE, NY (April 2022) – The Auxiliary of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center of Yonkers and The Maxwell Institute of Tuckahoe will host a program for parents on how to identify hidden references and paraphernalia that could indicate a teen’s drug or alcohol use.

Called Hidden in Plain Sight, the program will feature a replica of a teen’s bedroom that will test your knowledge and strength your observational skills. The replica of an adolescent’s bedroom is set up with common items teens use to hide drug paraphernalia. The interactive program is presented by Lillian Neuman, CASAC, Director of Outreach and Prevention Education for The Maxwell Institute, which is part of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center.

The program will be held Thursday, May 19 from 7:00 -8:30 pm at the Bronxville Public Library, 201 Pondfield Road, Bronxville. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The event is free. Preregistration is required. To RSVP visit www.saintjosephs.org/about-us/event/hidden-in-plain-sight

“Realizing that you or a loved one needs help is tough. If you take steps to get help early, you can avoid some of the devastating effects of addiction,” said Karen Goldman-Hertz, LCSW, Director of The Maxwell Institute in Tuckahoe, an outpatient center for addiction recovery that is part of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers

The Maxwell Institute offers a range of individual and group outpatient services, including medication-assisted treatment, for adults and adolescents. Services are provided by licensed professionals who work collaboratively with outside providers as needed. Maxwell’s adolescent program meets twice a week, with group therapy on topics such as education about the disease of alcoholism, development of positive coping skills, self-esteem and boundary issues. The Maxwell Institute is a Community Fund supported program.

Maxwell also offers community education services, which include:

  • Free presentations to school and community groups on topics such as: the dangers of vaping and marijuana use, cottage talks, and adjustment to college life.
  • Free virtual training on the use of naloxone overdose rescue kits is offered on the third Thursday of the month via Zoom. These programs are presented by Lillian Neuman, CASAC, Director of Outreach and Prevention Education. To register, email ssal@drugcrisisinourbackyard.com.
