Formula E Electric Car Race Returns To Red Hook This Weekend

The professional all-electric car race returns to Red Hook on Saturday and Sunday for the second year in a row.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — Charge up your batteries and start your engines: A professional all-electric car race returns to Red Hook's this weekend to crown this year's Formula E champion.

The Qatar Airways New York City E-Prix takes over the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on Saturday and Sunday with 10 teams and 20 drivers from around the world competing for the title, organizers said.

It marks the second-year in the row the all-electric car race comes to Brooklyn and will crown the champion for this year's Formula E series after races in Hong Kong, Mexico City, Rome, Paris and Berlin.

Despite only running on electricity, cars can reach up to 150-miles-per hour and can go from 0 to 60 MPH in as little as three seconds. Drivers will have to navigate a 14-turn, 1.47-mile track this year to get the title, longer than last year's 1.21-miles, according to organizers.

The event features several practice races and competitive ones throughout the two-day schedule. It also has a "eVillage" nearby with race simulators, driver meet-and-greets, live music and more, according to organizers.

Formula E's championship first took place in Brooklyn last year with British driver Sam Bird taking the title, the Verge reported.

Tickets for this year's event start at $85 for a single day for adults and $150 for both days, according to organizers.

Formula E also partnered with the New York City Economic Development Corporation to offer 1,000 free tickets that can be picked up at several locations around the neighborhood including Brooklyn Borough Hall, the Red Hook Community Justice Center and PortSide New York.
