BROOKLYN, NY — A man accused of slashing another man outside a Brooklyn shelter was shot multiple times by police Friday night after authorities said he charged at officers following a brief foot chase.

Police received a call around 11:40 p.m. about a slashing at a Flatbush shelter at 21 Duryea Place, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said at an overnight news conference. When officers arrived, they located both the accused slasher and the victim, who suffered an injury to his arm.

According to police, the suspect then fled on foot. Officers chased him nearly three blocks before he stopped on 21st Street, made "multiple intentional movements" and charged at police, Chell said.

"At this time, our officer had to defend himself. He fired his weapon multiple times, striking the preparator twice," Chell said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to recover, Chell said. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

According to Chell, investigators on the scene recovered a knife and "an additional cutting instrument."

The 29-year-old suspect's name was not released as charges are pending, police said. According to Chell, the man is a convicted felon with four prior arrests for assault and gun charges and assault. Chell said the man was also involved in a stabbing several months ago in Manhattan, where he allegedly slashed two people using a pair of scissors.
