1. Brooklyn Had Its Safest Year On Record In 2025, NYPD Says (patch.com) — Brooklyn residents are heading into 2026 with encouraging crime numbers, as officials report that 2025 was the borough’s safest year on record. Homicides, shooting homicides, and shooting incidents all dropped sharply, with neighborhoods like Brownsville, Crown Heights, Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, Borough Park, Greenpoint, and East New York seeing especially notable declines. Leaders credit community engagement and focused enforcement for the sustained reductions in gun violence.
   

2. ATM Thefts Across Brooklyn Linked To Same Group, Police Say (patch.com) — A series of late-night ATM burglaries has hit several Brooklyn neighborhoods, with East New York seeing many of the incidents and additional cases reported in Crown Heights, Cypress Hills, East Flatbush, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint. Police say at least 17 thefts and attempted thefts of ATMs and cars are linked to the same group operating across Brooklyn and Queens, and they are asking residents to share tips with Crime Stoppers. No injuries have been reported so far.
   

3. NYU Tandon School Opens New Brooklyn Hub For Robotics (indiawest.com) — NYU Tandon has opened a major new robotics and AI center in Downtown Brooklyn, anchoring a $1 billion university investment in engineering and science. The Center for Robotics and Embodied Intelligence brings 10,000 square feet of advanced lab space, over 70 researchers, strong industry partnerships, and a first‑in‑the‑nation master’s degree in Robotics and Embodied Intelligence to Brooklyn.
   

4. Designer Michael Kors, Rosie Perez will headline new God's Love distribution center opening (brooklyneagle.com) — A new 30,000-square-foot God's Love We Deliver distribution center is opening at Industry City on January 8, boosting meal capacity for Brooklyn residents with serious illnesses. With 26% of the nonprofit’s 15,000 clients living in Brooklyn, the Liberty BKLYN facility will help increase annual medically tailored meals from 4 million to 6.5 million, with celebrities joining volunteers for opening-day service.
   

5. Approx 20,000 nurses poised to strike at hospitals across NYC when the NYE ball drops (nydailynews.com) — Nurses at several major Brooklyn hospitals, including Maimonides, Brooklyn Hospital Center, and Interfaith, are set to strike around New Year’s if contract talks fail, potentially for up to 10 days. The citywide action centers on staffing levels, patient safety, and hospital security, with union leaders and supportive council members pressuring hospital executives to meet nurses’ demands.
