These BK Neighborhoods Are Cheapest In City For Roommates

BROOKLYN, NY — Roommates are a fact of life for many New Yorkers. And with rents rising, some apartments can feel a bit... cozy.

But despite rising rents in Kings County, a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn actually made it on a top list for affordable places to live with roommates compiled by roommate matching site SpareRoom.

The most affordable Brooklyn neighborhood for roommates?

Midwood, with an average monthly roommate rent of $1,021, according to Spareroom, ranking at number three on the list.

Other Brooklyn neighborhoods on the top ten list include Flatbush/Ditmas Park ($1,113), Bay Ridge/Ft. Hamilton ($1,116) and East Flatbush ($1,141).

Overall, Brooklyn had the highest increases in roommate rents citywide from 2021 to 2022, with rents increasing 18 percent from $1,210 to $1,431.

The neighborhood with the largest year-over-year increase is also, unfortunately, in Brooklyn.

Greenpoint saw their roommate rent increase an eye-watering 50 percent in 2022, from $1,171 to $1,754.

For those seeking roommate rent relief, the most affordable neighborhood in the Big Apple for roommates is in Queens, where Elmhurst can house roommates for an average monthly rent of $881.
