Brooklyn Children's Museum is hosting a tarantula-naming competition this October for its three new leggy pets: Two boys and one girl.
Museum officials say they want submissions to draw inspiration from Brooklyn, famous Brooklynites, neighborhood characters, heroes in science, and more.

“New York City's kids are clever and creative, and we can't wait to hear what they come up with,” said Atiba T. Edwards, the president and CEO of the museum, said. “Grownups, we encourage you to use this fun competition to spark your children's curiosity and imagination."
The contest is inspired by the Museum's new STEM makerspace, Nature’s Engineers, which has a spider-themed hands-on project this month.

At the “Arachnid Architecture”project station, kids will construct their own spider webs and test their designs to see how many ‘insects’ they can capture.
To enter the naming competition, visit the museum, where the three green-bottle blue tarantulas are on display, and write your submission on a postcard for the ballot box.
The last day to submit name ideas is Oct. 27 , the day of the Museum’s Halloween celebration, to which visitors are encouraged to come dressed in spider costumes.
To think of unique name ideas, "Come explore the Museum, explore this month's spider-inspired engineering project in our STEM makerspace, or check out some books at BPL's Brower Park Library branch, located in our building—it’s a great place to start," Edwards said.
The public will vote on the names on Halloween through the Museum's Instagram, and the winners will be announced on Nov. 1.
