BROOKLYN, NY — A man accused of stabbing a 20-year-old woman at an East New York subway station has struck again, stabbing a 77-year-old woman, according to police.

The unprovoked attack unfolded just after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Crescent Street subway station, according to police. The man came up behind the elderly woman as she was walking in the station and stabbed her with an unknown sharp object, police said.

The woman was sent to the hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

In that incident, the man came up and punched the woman in the back, police said. As the woman and her attacker argued, he took out a knife and stabbed the woman three times in the abdomen, police said.

She was also taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Police have released new surveillance photos of the suspected attacker:

The series of attacks come as city officials work to tamp down crime on the city's subway system with a "Subway Safety Plan" that began last week.

Violent attacks have continued even as the safety plan rolled out, including a man stabbed at a station in Crown Heights last week and a man who was shot at Broadway Junction station, according to officials.

Subway crimes as a whole have spiked 30 percent in the week since the safety plan was in place, according to reports.
