Brooklyn Teacher Sexually Abused Student, Police Say

CANARSIE, BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn teacher was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges that he sexually abused a student, the NYPD said. Andre Braddy, 34, a math teacher at Lenox Academy in Canarsie, allegedly carried out the abuse over at least a month, police said.

Braddy has taught eighth-grade math at the school at 100-01 Flatlands Ave. since September 2015, according to his LinkedIn profile. He allegedly abused the 15-year-old boy in a school bathroom, The New York Times reported.

The abuse was revealed after the boy told one of his parents about it, according to news reports. The Brooklyn Special Victims squad cuffed Braddy at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday, the NYPD said.

Braddy faces four criminal charges including criminal sexual act, which indicates the alleged abuse involved anal or oral sex.

The Department of Education has removed Braddy from the school, a spokesman said.

"These deeply disturbing allegations have no place in our schools and he was immediately removed from the school," DOE spokesman Douglas Cohen said in a statement. "He will remain away from students pending the outcome of the investigation and we will pursue his removal from payroll as soon as legally possible."

Braddy's LinkedIn profile says he is also an adjunct lecturer for the City University of New York. He previously worked as a teaching assistant at Medgar Evers College and the CUNY Research Foundation.

City Councilwoman Alicka Ampry-Samuel, who represents the Brownsville area, condemned the alleged abuse and said she'd work with school officials to get the student whatever support he needs.

"Schools are not only an educational institution but should be a safe haven for children to learn and grow," Ampry-Samuel, a Democrat, said in a statement.
