EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN — The polls are open for neighbors in East New York to choose who will represent them in the New York State Assembly.

The New York City Board of Elections has set up four early voting locations where residents of the 60th Assembly District can cast their ballots this week ahead of the Feb. 15 special election to replace former Assemblymember Charles Barron, who resigned his seat to join City Council.

The early voting spots will be open until Sunday, Feb. 13 and are in two spots within the district, which stretches over East New York and Starrett City.

The election marks an important moment for the district, as it will be the first time in more than a decade that someone other than Barron or his wife, Inez Barron, will hold the seat in the state legislature.

The Barrons have held the City Council and Assembly seats in East New York since 2009. Most recently, Charles was re-elected to the 42nd City Council District seat after Inez retired, leaving the Assembly spot open, according to reports.

The candidates include Democrat-backed Nikki Lucas, who challenged Charles Barron in last year's City Council race, and Keron Alleyne, who is supported by the Working Families Party and the Barrons, who he used to work for. The ballot will also include Marvin J. King on the Conservative party line.
