Myrie Holds Resource Fair In Brownsville Senior Center
More than 100 people attended the resource fair on Tuesday, according to State Sen. Zellnor Myrie's office

BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN — More than 100 seniors turned out to a NYCHA senior center in Brownsville on Tuesday to get help with housing and health care, State Sen. Zellnor Myrie's office said.
The resource fair, held at the Seth Low Senior Center, was attended by a slew of social service organizations and city agencies that handle matters important to seniors. Among the groups seniors were able to consult with were the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the AARP and St. Nicks Alliance.
“Up in Albany, we spend a great deal of time discussing major policy reforms and challenges that face our whole state, but if we can’t help the people in our district with their day-to-day problems, then none of that matters,” Myrie— who represents Brownsville, Crown Heights and other adjacent neighborhoods— said in a statement.

The first-term state senator also stressed the importance of addressing the housing insecurity many seniors face, noting that, according to Comptroller Scott Stringer, 60 percent of seniors in New York City are rent-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent.
“No senior should face housing insecurity, but we know that in Central Brooklyn, all too many do," he said. "Along with so many other issues, I’m heartened we were able to deliver services and guidance to seniors who struggle with housing insecurity in our community.”
